Unlocked your phone and forgotten what you meant to do? Go back to the action just before: looking up information, replying to someone or noting an idea. If you cannot find an intention, you can put the phone down instead of opening an app by default.

Did you forget what you meant to do, or pick it up without a reason?

You may have had an intention and lost track of it, or picked up the phone without a particular aim. Those are different situations.

For the first, return to the context. Which conversation, task or object led you to pick it up? For the second, consider what you wanted from that moment. Looking at content can be a choice; the question is whether it matches what you wanted to do.

Notice where you change direction

For example, you pick up the phone to note an address, notice a message and open a link. The address is still unwritten, and now you need to remember why you unlocked the screen.

If that sequence is familiar, try finishing the original action before opening the message. You could also limit notifications that interrupt it or put your notes app somewhere easy to reach. Choose one change you can observe, rather than trying to alter every phone habit at once.

Find your place after an interruption

If you cannot remember where you were, look for the particular passage or question you were dealing with before rereading the whole file. You can leave that reference before a planned break.

Write something like “checked the table as far as the expenses row” or “return to the email paragraph about the date”. These examples preserve a specific point to return to without reconstructing the whole previous session.

One lapse does not explain its cause

Forgetting why you picked up the phone does not establish a memory problem or prove that your mind is “too full”. The context, frequency and effects on your day matter.

If forgetfulness becomes repeated or affects your activities, talk to a doctor. Assurance Maladie, France's public health insurance service, explains when to seek advice about memory difficulties. Avoid automatically attributing them to apps or mental load.

Choose an experiment for the situation

  • You forget to capture an idea: open the note directly, without going through a feed.
  • You pick up the phone whenever work gets difficult: write what you are looking for or what is missing before changing activities.
  • A message regularly interrupts work: set aside time for replies or turn off that notification when it can wait.

If you need to remain reachable, keep the necessary channels open. Putting the phone out of reach means something different during an on-call shift from a session when no calls are expected.

Where Molleva can help

Molleva gives you somewhere to note what you want to find again, then choose the essentials in Today. Later keeps the other notes separate from the day's selection.

This may suit you if you already use the phone to capture notes. If it consistently leads you elsewhere, paper may be better for this job. Molleva is not an app blocker and does not measure your attention.

Questions about picking up the phone automatically

Do I have to stop using social media completely?

That is not the only option. First identify what is bothering you: spending longer than intended, interruptions or forgetting an action. Choose a change for that problem rather than a rule meant for everyone.

Should I record every time I use my phone?

No. You can look at one recurring moment, such as returning to a report or going to bed. Observing it is a way to choose something to try, not a requirement for constant tracking.

Is a task list enough to solve it?

No. A list can preserve an action and its context, but cannot resolve every phone habit. If a notification interrupts you, look at that notification too. If work exceeds the time available, a list alone cannot reduce the workload.

Before you unlock the screen again

Name what you want to do and finish that action before following another prompt. If you picked up the phone for a note, choose a place where you will know to find it.
